Houston Museum of Natural Science, Natural science museum in Hermann Park, Houston, US
The Houston Museum of Natural Science is a multistory science museum in Hermann Park with galleries devoted to paleontology, astronomy, geology, and biology. The rooms spread across several floors and display minerals, fossils, preserved animals, and scientific instruments in thematically organized sections.
The Houston Museum and Scientific Society founded the institution in 1909 and moved several times before settling at its current site in 1969. The permanent collections grew steadily over the decades through donations and scientific expeditions.
The museum serves as a learning center for school groups from across the region, who participate in hands-on workshops and explore scientific collections. Visitors can conduct experiments themselves in the different halls and deepen their understanding at interactive stations.
The building opens daily and provides access to permanent exhibitions as well as rotating special displays in separate areas. Visitors should plan several hours for a complete tour, as the galleries are distributed across multiple levels.
The Morian Hall of Paleontology displays dozens of complete dinosaur skeletons in a massive hall built specifically to showcase prehistoric finds. Some of the skeletons stand in recreated combat poses that give visitors a sense of the dynamics of these extinct animals.
