Colorado City, County seat in Mitchell County, Texas
Colorado City is the county seat of Mitchell County, located between the Colorado River and Lone Wolf Creek in the Texas plains. The town provides amenities including Lake Colorado City State Park and several restaurants for visitors to enjoy.
The settlement began as a ranger camp in 1877 and quickly became a major cattle transportation center. Railroad connections starting in 1881 turned it into a hub for regional livestock trade.
The Mitchell County courthouse displays a commemorative statue honoring former U.S. Representative George Mahon, who spent his early years in the area.
The easiest way to explore town is on foot through the center, then drive out to the lake for outdoor activities. Most visitors can split their time between local restaurants and the park without difficulty.
In the 1880s this was briefly a thriving town with several thousand residents all dependent on cattle shipping. That era shaped its buildings and layout in ways still visible today.
