Temple, Railroad city in Bell County, Texas.
Temple is a city in Bell County, Texas, positioned along Interstate 35 in the central part of the Killeen-Temple-Fort Hood metropolitan region. The settlement spreads across several miles, linking residential neighborhoods with a center where shops and medical facilities are located.
An engineer named Bernard Moore Temple founded the settlement on June 29, 1881, during the construction of the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railroad. The development of the rail line shaped the first decades of the town and brought trade and new residents to the area.
The street layout follows the original railroad tracks that shaped the town, with many blocks running parallel to the rail line. Residents often gather in parks along the main corridors, and the healthcare sector has become the primary workplace for a large portion of the community.
Amtrak trains on the Texas Eagle line stop here and link the city to larger destinations across Texas and beyond. The local airport serves smaller aircraft and offers connections for business travelers and private pilots from the surrounding area.
The large medical center Baylor Scott & White employs more people than any other workplace in the city. This shift turned the former railroad town into a regional hub for healthcare services, drawing patients and professionals from a wide surrounding area.
