Ardmore serves as county seat of Carter County in south central Oklahoma, roughly 90 minutes south of the state capital. Interstate 35 runs north to south through town, linking it with other communities across the region.
A railway company established the town in 1887 as a stop along the line running through Indian Territory. The discovery of oil near Healdton in 1913 brought a rapid influx of new residents and industry.
The town took its name from a large rail yard in Pennsylvania that one of its founders remembered. Downtown streets follow a grid of wide blocks lined with low brick buildings and warehouses that date from the railroad and oil boom years.
The town spreads across several miles in low buildings, so a car is useful for getting around. Summer days are often hot and sunny, while winter months are milder with occasional rain.
A former Air Force base was converted into a business park where manufacturing and logistics companies now operate. The site still has several hangars and admin buildings dating from the 1940s.
