Garland, Urban center in northeastern Dallas metropolitan area, Texas
Garland sits in the northeastern part of the Dallas metro area and spreads across three counties with residential, commercial, and industrial zones. Several recreation areas are scattered throughout the city and provide green spaces between the built-up blocks.
The settlement grew from rivalry between two small communities, Embree and Duck Creek, and received its current name in 1891. The railroad brought growth and connected the area to larger markets in the east.
The name honors a 19th-century lawyer, though today visitors know the town mostly through its stages and parks. Local theater performances draw audiences from surrounding counties.
Two DART Blue Line stations connect the area to downtown Dallas and allow travel without a car. Bus stops offer additional connections within the region.
The municipality manages more than 1,160 hectares of public green space split across over 60 parks. Six recreation centers provide indoor facilities for sports and events throughout the year.
