Lake Gilmer, body of water
Lake Gilmer is a reservoir in Texas located approximately 4 miles west of Gilmer, covering around 1,010 acres with a maximum depth of 28 feet. The lake sits on Kelsey Creek within the Cypress River Basin and is surrounded by forests and wetlands that create a natural setting.
The lake was formed in 2001 when Kelsey Creek was impounded, creating a stable water level that remains consistent year-round. Since its opening, it has grown into a popular destination for residents and visitors throughout the region.
The lake is easily reached from downtown Gilmer via FM 852 and has parking and facilities for visitors. Well-marked trails lead through the area and extend into the nearby Kelsey Creek Sanctuary, where additional nature paths are available.
The lake is home to several fish species including largemouth bass, catfish, and bluegill, with natural pockets of submerged wood and brush that create ideal fish habitats. This structure makes it a favored fishing destination with good chances for successful catches.
