The school was founded in the 20th century and has served the Westbank community as a stable educational institution ever since. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005 damaged the buildings, repairs and upgrades were carried out to strengthen the campus against future storms.
The school is named after a local educator, reflecting its deep ties to the Westbank community. The red, white, and blue colors of the Patriots are visible on banners and uniforms during games and school events.
The campus is easy to find on Patriot Street near Marrero, as it is a clearly marked school zone. Since it is an active school, visitors are generally welcome during public events such as sports games rather than during regular school hours.
Among its graduates are several professional athletes who went on to play in the NFL and NBA, as well as Grammy Award winners. This makes John Ehret one of the most productive schools in Louisiana in terms of nationally recognized alumni.
