Saint Alphonsus Church

Saint Alphonsus Church is a Gothic Revival structure in Lower Garden District featuring a symmetrical facade with two square towers, decorated pilasters, corbelled brick panels, and stone niches designed for statues. The building displays the distinctive proportions and ornamental details typical of this architectural style, with the exterior showing careful attention to symmetry and decoration.

The building was completed in 1855 by architect Louis L. Long and served the growing Catholic community in New Orleans. It received National Historic Landmark designation in 1996, recognizing its architectural significance and role in the city's religious heritage.

The interior reveals a richly colored design with a coved plaster ceiling painted by Dominique Canova and stained glass windows from F. X. Zettler of Bavaria. These artistic details reflect the blend of French and German Catholic traditions that once drew worshippers to this space.
