Beaumont is a county seat on the Neches River in Southeast Texas. The place covers 220 square kilometers (85 square miles), with industrial districts alternating with parks and residential areas.
The discovery of the Spindletop oil field in 1901 turned a small settlement into a center of the petroleum industry. Within months, numerous refineries emerged that continue to shape the region's economy today.
The name comes from Mary Dewburleigh Beaumont, wife of Henry Millard, one of the early land developers. The community today hosts a mix of industrial sites and neighborhoods, with daily routines unfolding around the sprawling campus of the local university.
