Pat O'Brien's Bar, Piano bar in French Quarter, New Orleans, United States
Pat O'Brien's Bar is a pub and entertainment venue in the French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana. The building holds several rooms including a main bar with hundreds of beer mugs on the walls, a courtyard with seating and fountains, and a hall with two pianos for live performances.
The establishment opened in 1933, shortly before Prohibition ended in the United States. In 2022 it received the Icon of the Year award from the Louisiana Restaurant Association for its role in local hospitality.
The name honors Pat O'Brien, a businessman who opened the space shortly after Prohibition ended. Visitors today use the courtyard with its tropical plants and benches as a gathering spot, while in the piano room two musicians play simultaneously and take requests from the audience.
The place opens Wednesday through Monday with changing hours and accepts only cash payment. Ramps and lifts allow people with limited mobility to reach all areas of the building.
The courtyard fountain takes the shape of a champagne glass with water jets rising from its rim while an open flame burns in the center. This combination of water and fire creates an unusual display for guests sitting outdoors.
