Melrose Plantation, Historic plantation in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana.
Melrose Plantation is a historic plantation in Natchitoches Parish comprising nine buildings arranged across the grounds. The structures include the main residence, the African House with its distinctive umbrella-shaped roof, the Yucca House, and additional outbuildings situated among landscaped gardens.
Marie Therese Coincoin, formerly enslaved, acquired land in the late 1700s and built a prosperous family enterprise, with her descendants expanding the plantation throughout the 1800s. During the 1900s, the site transformed into an arts center where creative work and cultural activity became central to the property.
Artist Clementine Hunter painted hundreds of works here during the 20th century, depicting daily life and moments from the community around her. Her paintings remain displayed in the buildings, showing how people worked, gathered, and lived on the grounds.
The site is best explored through guided tours offered Wednesday through Sunday, with knowledgeable guides leading visitors through the different buildings and their stories. It helps to budget enough time for each building and to view the artworks displayed indoors.
The African House displays architectural elements drawn from multiple cultural traditions of Louisiana, including West African design features and French colonial styles. This combination makes it an uncommon example of how different cultures shaped building practices in the region.
