Narcisse Prudhomme Plantation

Narcisse Prudhomme Plantation is an antebellum house in Natchitoches with 12-foot (3.6-meter) ceilings, bousillage walls made from clay and moss, and French doors opening to the grounds. The building sits in the Cane River region where similar plantation estates line the landscape.

The house was built between 1790 and 1821, first owned by Louis Barthelemy Rachal before Louis Narcisse Prudhomme purchased it and expanded cotton cultivation on the land. The property became an agricultural center in the Natchitoches region during this early period.

The building combines French Colonial and Greek Revival styles, showing how different building traditions came together in early Louisiana. Walking through the rooms, you notice how these two influences shaped the way the house was designed and constructed.

The site sits near other historic estates like Oaklawn, Cherokee, and Cedar Bend in the Cane River region, making it easy to visit several properties on the same trip. You can walk through the grounds and explore the main house at your own pace during daylight hours.

Local stories suggest the land once held a French fort, and the plantation is sometimes called Beau Fort Plantation because of this earlier use. This military connection adds a hidden layer to the site's past that most visitors do not immediately discover.
