Tylertown

Tylertown is the administrative center of Walthall County in Mississippi, situated around 80 miles south of Jackson. The town occupies roughly 3.1 square miles of land and sits at an elevation of 318 feet.

The settlement began as Magee Settlement after J. Thornhill acquired the first land from Native Americans in 1816. The community later became the administrative center for Walthall County.

The town hosts regular trade days where local merchants, craftspeople, and farmers sell their goods to the community. These gatherings shape how people in the area buy and exchange products.

The area hosts several schools, including elementary schools and Tylertown High School, that form the local education system. Visitors will notice that these facilities shape the daily rhythm and infrastructure of the community.

During World War II, the town organized a special Thanksgiving celebration that featured thousands of fried chickens and hundreds of turkeys. This gathering shows how the community came together to celebrate harvest and unity during wartime.
