Laurel is a city in Jones County in eastern Mississippi, sitting 82 meters above sea level. Tree-lined streets run through the area, and several historic commercial buildings define the downtown core.
The city emerged in 1882 after the New Orleans and Northeastern Railroad line was built through the area. Over the following decades it developed into an important center for the timber industry.
The Lauren Rogers Museum displays European paintings, Native American baskets and Japanese woodblock prints inside a neoclassical red brick building. Visitors also find American artworks and handcrafted textiles from different regions.
The Hattiesburg-Laurel Regional Airport offers flight connections to nearby cities. The Amtrak Crescent line stops here and links the city with other destinations along the East Coast.
The company Howard Industries manufactures transformers here and employs several thousand people from the region. The facility ranks among the largest producers of its kind in North America.
