Tougaloo College, Historic black college in Tougaloo, Mississippi, US.
Tougaloo College is a historically black institution in Madison County, Mississippi, with a campus spanning approximately 200 hectares (500 acres). Ten buildings form a protected historic ensemble, including a chapel and an administration building named after a founder.
Missionaries from New York founded the institution in 1869 as a training center for freed slaves and their children. Until 1892, the college focused on preparing teachers.
The chapel on campus bears the founder's name and now serves as a gathering place for academic celebrations and worship services. Many students visit the library, which holds archival material from the civil rights movement.
Access to the campus is available during daytime hours, and visitors can view the historic buildings from the outside. A short walk through the grounds shows the oldest structures and the library area.
An art collection from the 1960s displays works by African American artists and documents from the civil rights movement. More than half of the black medical professionals in Mississippi began their education at this institution.
