Oakey Streak Methodist Episcopal Church

Oakey Streak Methodist Episcopal Church, church building in Alabama, United States of America

Oakey Streak Methodist Episcopal Church is a small house of worship near Greenville, Alabama, featuring Gothic Revival details such as pointed lancet windows and a simple exterior. The building measures roughly 32 by 48 feet inside and is crowned by a small bell tower that was added around 1903.

The original church was founded in 1831, with land donated to the congregation in 1851, beginning as a simple log structure. The current frame building was constructed around the 1880s and received its distinctive bell tower during renovations in 1903.

This church served as a social gathering place where the Greenville community came together for worship and local events over many generations. It represents how faith and community life were deeply connected in rural Alabama.

The building sits off State Route 59 near Greenville in a rural setting and is easy to spot by its pointed windows and bell tower. Since it is no longer used regularly, visiting during daytime hours and exploring the exterior is the best approach.

A neighboring Masonic Lodge that stood beside the church was torn down in the 1940s, though both buildings together served as an important social hub for the region. This dual function as both religious and social space was particularly characteristic of rural Alabama communities.
