Columbus, County seat in Lowndes County, Mississippi.
Columbus is a county seat in Lowndes County in eastern Mississippi. The town extends across several low hills with residential neighborhoods, commercial streets, and public buildings, while the Tombigbee River marks the eastern boundary.
Founded in 1821 as a trading post along the river, it grew rapidly through cotton commerce and rail connections. The Civil War brought military occupation, after which new economic structures emerged.
The name honors the explorer but represents only part of the local identity. Churches of different denominations serve as gathering points for communities and underline the religious diversity in daily life.
The center is compact and can be crossed on foot in a few minutes. Streets run in all directions and make orientation easy between residential areas and public facilities.
The area was home to the Chickasaw Nation until the early 19th century before European settlers arrived. Traces of this earlier presence remain in some place names and archaeological sites.
