Colon Cemetery, Historical cemetery in Vedado, Cuba
The cemetery extends across 56 hectares with over 500 mausoleums, featuring architectural elements from Gothic towers to Greek pavilions and Medieval castles.
Construction started in 1871 when the first stone was placed at the main entrance, and the project was completed in 1886 at a cost of 606,727 gold pesos.
The cemetery incorporates symbols throughout its monuments, including trees for eternal evolution, angels as intermediaries, and torches representing purification through religious traditions.
Located at Calle Zapata and Calle 12 in Vedado, Havana, the cemetery welcomes visitors daily from 8 AM to 5 PM with an entrance fee of 5 CUC.
The designer Calixto de Loira became the first person buried in the Tobias Gallery, which he created, after dying from overwork during construction in 1872.
