The stadium opened its doors on October 26, 1946, as Gran Estadio de La Habana, with Almendares defeating Cienfuegos 9-1 in front of 31,000 spectators.
The venue serves as the primary location for Cuban baseball games and has hosted numerous international competitions between national teams.
The stadium features modern lighting systems for night games and underwent substantial renovations in 1971 to expand its seating capacity from 31,000 to 55,000.
In 2016, the stadium hosted a game between the Tampa Bay Rays and Cuba's national team, attended by presidents Barack Obama and Raúl Castro.
