San Alfonso del Mar, Coastal resort in Algarrobo, Chile.
San Alfonso del Mar is a resort on the Pacific coast featuring an artificial lagoon that stretches over a kilometer and is filled with filtered seawater drawn from the neighboring ocean. The complex runs along the shore of Algarrobo and includes residential units, leisure facilities, and multiple swimming zones around the large water basin.
This residential complex opened in 1993 and established new standards for resorts with large artificial water basins through the use of advanced filtration systems. The development of the project led to the creation of one of the longest artificial lagoons in the world on the Chilean coast.
This resort takes its name from Saint Alphonsus Liguori and reflects a blend of Chilean coastal building traditions with contemporary design spread across more than a thousand residential units. Residents and visitors use the different zones both for sports and for relaxing beside the water.
Visitors find numerous facilities including restaurants, sports areas, an underground nightclub, wellness services, and various swimming zones within the grounds. Information about access conditions is best obtained before traveling, as the complex is mainly designed for owners and their guests.
The lagoon system processes and stores around 250 million liters of treated seawater and covers more than eight hectares with a deepest point of about three and a half meters. The water temperature remains several degrees warmer than the adjacent Pacific throughout the year.
