Ferguson Bay, Natural inlet in Thule Island, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands
Ferguson Bay is an inlet on the southeastern coast of Thule Island, forming a natural indentation between Herd Point and Hewison Point. The waters lie in the southern Atlantic and are bordered by rocky shores typical of this subantarctic region.
The bay came under British military control in June 1982 following operations that ended an Argentine occupation. That occupation had begun with the establishment of a military base in 1976.
The bay represents territorial sovereignty discussions between Argentina and the United Kingdom regarding control over the South Sandwich Islands territory.
This bay offers the only protected anchorage in Southern Thule for ships in the subantarctic waters. Visitors should expect extreme weather conditions and respect local conditions.
The waters stay below 8 degrees Celsius year-round and support specialized marine life adapted to these extreme conditions. These cold waters make the bay a habitat for rare subantarctic species.
