Obelisk of São Paulo, War memorial in Ibirapuera Park, Brazil.
The Obelisk of São Paulo is a war memorial in Parque Ibirapuera in Vila Mariana that rises 72 meters and shapes the park skyline. Inside the mausoleum, marble structures hold the remains of soldiers who died in 1932, while bronze details decorate the outer facade.
This memorial honors soldiers who died during the 1932 Constitutionalist Revolution against President Getúlio Vargas's government in São Paulo. Construction began in the late 1940s and was completed a few years later to commemorate the fight for a new constitution.
Inside this memorial, verses by Guilherme de Almeida decorate the walls, while Italian mosaics show scenes from the revolution period. The bronze reliefs on the outer sides represent moments of civil resistance, and many visitors leave small Brazilian flags near the entrance.
The memorial stands on Avenida Pedro Álvares Cabral and opens daily from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with guided visits on certain weekdays. Stairs lead to the mausoleum entrance, and the surrounding area is good for short walks.
The building covers exactly 1,932 square meters, a deliberate reference to the year of the revolution it honors. Visitors can enjoy a wide view over the park and city from the upper part of the structure if they climb the interior steps.
