São Paulo Museum of Modern Art, Art museum in Moema District, São Paulo, Brazil.
The São Paulo Museum of Modern Art is an art museum in the Moema District of São Paulo, Brazil, located within the green expanse of Ibirapuera Park. The institution offers several exhibition spaces where a collection of more than four thousand works is presented.
Francisco Matarazzo Sobrinho and Yolanda Penteado founded the institution in 1948, modeling it after the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The opening exhibition titled Do Figurativismo ao Abstracionismo sparked debates about the shift between artistic movements in Brazil.
The collection brings together Brazilian artists alongside international names, making visible the dialogue between local production and global currents in modern art. Temporary exhibitions often place contemporary artists in conversation with historical works, creating connections across decades.
The museum opens Tuesday through Sunday between 10 AM and 6 PM, offering free admission every Tuesday and on the first Thursday of each month. Its location within the park makes it easy to combine a visit with a walk through the green spaces.
The outdoor sculpture garden displays monumental works under open sky, allowing visitors to walk among the pieces. This connection between art and nature creates an open encounter with three-dimensional forms.
