Wonderboom Nature Reserve

The Wonderboom Nature Reserve is a protected area near Pretoria that stretches across 200 hectares within the Magaliesberg range. The grounds contain various antelope species, primates, and over 200 bird species, along with archaeological sites featuring prehistoric tools and artifacts from different periods.

The reserve emerged from early European settlers' interest in this special location, but it was revered for older reasons as people lived here since the Stone Age, leaving tools behind. The area later played a role during the Second Boer War, with fortifications still visible today.

The central Wonderboom fig tree holds significance in local traditions, and you can observe how this tree draws different visitors seeking to understand its place in the region's life. The Wonderboom fig tree is actually multiple trees in one, having developed daughter trees that grow around its thick trunk and together form a mini-forest. This natural reproduction method is so successful that the structure gains size and complexity year after year.
