Piton des Cascades, Mountain summit in Sainte-Rose, Réunion.
Piton des Cascades is a mountain summit standing 171 meters high on Réunion's eastern coast, composed of dark volcanic rocks surrounded by dense vegetation. Multiple freshwater streams flow through the area and converge near the peak, shaping the terrain.
This volcanic formation developed from past eruptions of Piton de la Fournaise and created a distinct geological feature on the eastern coast. The volcanic activity shaped the entire region and its characteristic landscape structure.
The name refers to the waterfalls that cascade from the summit and shape the landscape. Locals use this route as part of exploring the coastal region and its natural water systems.
The hike begins from the parking area at Anse des Cascades and takes about one hour to reach the summit in each direction. The marked trails are well signposted, but the terrain is steep and slippery in places, especially after rain.
Freshwater streams flow directly from the peak into the Indian Ocean, creating a rare connection between the high ground and the sea. This direct water flow is uncommon in Reunion's coastal regions and makes the location hydrographically distinctive.
