Roche Écrite

Roche Écrite is a mountain summit that rises to about 2,274 meters above sea level and features steep rocky paths with dense forests along the ascent. The route passes through different elevation zones where vegetation and terrain shift noticeably as you climb higher.

The mountain became significant during the colonial period when coffee plantations covered the lower slopes and shaped the infrastructure of the island. The hiking trails developed later as part of the gradual opening up of the mountain region.

The summit is part of Réunion National Park and plays a role in protecting the natural diversity found across the island. Visitors encounter rare plant species and bird species that exist nowhere else in the world.

The hiking route requires good shoes, weather-resistant clothing, and regular breaks due to the large elevation gain and demanding terrain. Weather can change rapidly, so monitor conditions before and during your hike.

The summit is home to specialized bird species that have adapted to the harsh conditions of the high mountain slopes and exist nowhere else on Earth. These rare birds are a primary reason why nature observers undertake the demanding hike.
