Sawahlunto, Mining heritage city in West Sumatra, Indonesia
The city lies in a narrow valley within the Bukit Barisan mountains at 295 meters elevation, surrounded by steep hills across 273 square kilometers.
The Dutch colonial administration established Sawahlunto in 1888 after discovering coal deposits, leading to extensive mining operations and railway infrastructure development.
Multiple museums, including the Goedang Ransum Museum and Railway Museum, preserve artifacts and documents from the coal mining period of Southeast Asia.
The city maintains four administrative districts - Barangin, Lembah Segar, Silungkang, and Talawi - with temperatures ranging between 22.5 and 27.5 degrees Celsius.
The Ombilin coal mining site earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 2019 as the first industrial heritage site in Indonesia.
