Newbury Park is a residential community in the western part of Thousand Oaks, sitting at 628 feet (191 m) elevation and surrounded by mountain ranges and open spaces. Properties here tend to be larger than in neighboring sections, and trails lead directly into the surrounding hills.
The community takes its name from Egbert Starr Newbury, who purchased around 2,200 acres in 1875 and opened the first post office in the Conejo Valley here. This settlement marked the start of European occupation in this section of the valley.
The Satwiwa Native American Indian Culture Center preserves the heritage of the Chumash people who lived in this region for more than 6,000 years. Visitors can walk through reconstructed village structures and original pathways that show how the Chumash organized their daily lives.
The community sits along three exits on U.S. Route 101, making arrival straightforward. Properties here cost less than in other parts of the Conejo Valley, and many trails begin right at the edge of residential streets.
Multiple mammoth fossils have been discovered here, providing evidence of prehistoric life in this part of Southern California. The finds come from different periods and show what the region looked like long ago.
