Texas Governor's Mansion, Official governor residence in downtown Austin, United States.
The Texas Governor's Mansion is an official governor residence in downtown Austin, Texas, built in the Greek Revival style. Six Ionic columns support the front porch, while large floor-to-ceiling windows run through all floors.
Architect Abner Cook completed construction in 1854, and two years later the first governor moved in. Since then, the residence has served this purpose continuously, making it one of the oldest active governor homes in the United States.
The building still displays furniture from the era of the Texas Republic, including pieces that belonged to the founders of the state. Visitors can see during tours the rooms where official receptions and ceremonies take place.
Guided tours take place on three afternoons per week and are free to attend. Registration follows a first-come, first-served basis, so arriving early helps secure a spot.
An arson attack in 2008 damaged large parts of the interior, after which restorers worked for four years on reconstruction. Many details were rebuilt using historical photographs and building plans to restore the original mid-19th century design.
