Westgate Tower, High-rise residential tower near Texas State Capitol, Austin, United States.
Westgate Tower is a 26-story residential high-rise featuring reinforced concrete construction with a brown brick exterior and floor-to-ceiling windows. The structure displays mid-century modern design principles with functional, straightforward proportions typical of 1960s residential architecture.
Built in 1966 as Austin's first residential high-rise, this tower marked the beginning of vertical residential development in the city. Its construction prompted discussions that ultimately led to protective Capitol View Corridors regulations.
The building housed the Headliners' Club on its twenty-fourth floor from 1966 to 1975, where Texas politicians and academics gathered for social events. This gathering space shaped the local social and professional networks of the era.
The tower features a rooftop swimming pool and 24-hour concierge service available to residents, along with controlled-access parking on site. A dedicated maintenance team keeps the building and amenities in good working order.
Former President Lyndon B. Johnson and Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst both chose this building as their residence during their political careers. Few visitors realize the building hosted two of Texas's most prominent political figures as residents.
