Lorenzo de Zavala State Archives and Library Building
Lorenzo de Zavala State Archives and Library Building, State archives and library building in Austin, United States.
The Lorenzo de Zavala State Archives and Library Building sits east of the Texas State Capitol and was built using pink Sunset Red Texas Granite. The structure blends modern functionality with traditional design elements following Stripped Classicism style.
The facility opened in 1961 as the headquarters of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission to preserve governmental documents and historical records. Since its founding, it has served to manage and protect materials documenting the state's history and governance.
The building displays Texas seal mosaics and a large mural showing how Texas history unfolded across its exhibition spaces.
Research facilities are open Tuesday through Friday, with extended hours on the second Saturday of each month. Visitors should check in advance whether special credentials or registrations are needed to access certain collections.
The building was constructed using local pink granite quarried from Texas sources, giving it a distinctive hue. This material choice was both practical and symbolic of the structure's connection to the region.
