Scholz Garten, Beer garden and German restaurant in downtown Austin, United States.
Scholz Garten is a beer garden and German restaurant in downtown Austin featuring a white main building with indoor dining areas and an outdoor section with long wooden tables under trees. The property includes several adjoining structures, with a bowling alley containing six lanes available for visitors to use.
August Scholz, a German immigrant, established this gathering place in 1866 as a meeting point for his community. Since 1914, the property has been run by the Austin Saengerrunde, a German singing society, making it among the oldest continuously operating beer gardens in the United States.
The place has long served as a gathering spot for Austin's German-speaking community, where traditions like singing and celebrations continue to thrive. Visitors can still feel the connection to German roots that shape the character of this space.
The restaurant serves German and Texan food daily in both sections of the property, offering a relaxed setting for dining and lingering. Visitors can bowl while enjoying food and drinks, or simply sit under the trees in the outdoor area and unwind.
The location has served as an informal meeting place for local politicians and athletes for over 150 years, where victories have been celebrated and important conversations held. This historical role as a site of political and athletic gatherings continues to shape its identity today.
