Gethsemane Lutheran Church, Lutheran church in North Austin, United States
Gethsemane Lutheran Church is a Gothic-style building located in North Austin between Interstate 35 and Lamar Boulevard. The interior features a contemporary sanctuary with stained glass windows, angled seating, and several multipurpose buildings surrounding the main structure for worship and community activities.
The congregation began with the first Swedish Lutheran service held in Austin in 1868. This early gathering marked the foundation of Lutheran worship in the city and later developed into this established community of believers.
The stained glass windows throughout the sanctuary display the work of French artist Gabriel Loire, who used more than 150 shades of blue to depict biblical narratives. These windows are visible from every seat in the worship space.
The church campus spreads across multiple buildings including a gymnasium, educational facilities, a memorial garden, and outdoor play areas for families. Plan for a larger walking area since the complex includes several separate structures.
Five tile mosaics depicting biblical scenes are placed throughout the building, with two positioned above the lower entrance and three at the main entrance. These overlooked artistic details add a tactile dimension to the architectural decoration.
