Inner Space Cavern, Show cave in Georgetown, Texas.
Inner Space Cavern is a show cave in Georgetown, Texas, that runs through natural limestone formations with stalactites, stalagmites and flowing stone structures. The cave stretches across several underground chambers connected by walkable passages and narrow corridors.
Workers from the Texas Highway Department discovered the cave in 1963 while drilling tests for an Interstate 35 overpass. The discovery led to scientific study of the geological formation and its Ice Age animal fossils.
The name refers to the underground geology, which appeared as an empty space inside the earth when workers first broke through before the formations became visible. School groups visit regularly to study the limestone layers and observe the mineral deposits up close.
The cave keeps a steady temperature around 70 degrees Fahrenheit (21 degrees Celsius) year-round, so light clothing works fine. Three different tour options are available, from easy paths to advanced climbing routes for experienced visitors.
Paleontologists have found numerous bones from Ice Age animals in the sediment layers, including remains of mammoths, giant sloths and saber-toothed tigers. The finds show that this region had a different climate and wildlife thousands of years ago.
