Greenville sits 50 miles (80 kilometers) northeast of Dallas and covers 33 square miles (86 square kilometers) of Texas blackland prairie, crossed by the Cowleech Fork of the Sabine River. The city serves as the administrative seat of Hunt County and connects rural areas with larger urban centers in Texas.
The city was founded in 1846 and named after Thomas J. Green, who served in the Texas Republic Congress and shaped the early development of Texas. The location along major transport routes supported the growth of the community in the following decades.
The Audie Murphy American Cotton Museum holds collections and exhibits on the agricultural and military past of Hunt County and Northeast Texas. Visitors can trace how cotton shaped life in the region and what role local figures played in American history.
