Jasper, County seat in Deep East Texas, United States.
Jasper is a county seat in the eastern part of Texas and sits among forests near the Louisiana border. Three lakes surround the town and shape the landscape around it.
The settlement began in 1824 through John Bevil and was first called Snow River. Eleven years later it received its current name in honor of William Jasper, who fought in the American Revolutionary War.
Every first Saturday in October the Butterfly Festival takes place and celebrates the passage of monarch butterflies through the area. Locals often gather in parks and along trails to watch and photograph the migrating insects.
The town sits between Houston and Shreveport and serves as a stop for travelers passing through the forested areas. Public gardens and walking trails are accessible during daylight hours.
The Jasper Arboretum Project began in the year 2000 and includes public gardens as well as paths through native vegetation. An Outdoor Learning Center was added in 2012 and has since served as a site for educational programs in nature.
