Homestead

Homestead is a city in Miami-Dade County in southern Florida, positioned between Biscayne National Park to the east and Everglades National Park to the west. The city covers an area of roughly 37 square kilometers (14.4 square miles) and sits in a region shaped by both agriculture and proximity to protected natural areas.

After the Florida East Coast Railway was built, the settlement received its first train station in 1904 and was officially incorporated as the second oldest city in Miami-Dade County in 1913. The railway connection brought new settlers and supported the agricultural development of the region.

The Historic Town Hall Museum displays objects and documents from the region's past in permanent exhibition rooms. Visitors can trace how the area evolved over time through these collections.

The city lies near two well-known national parks and often serves travelers as a starting point for trips into these natural areas. Those spending more time in the area can find shopping and services in a smaller, quieter setting than in Miami.

A local program limits annual increases in assessed property value to 3 percent or the inflation rate, protecting long-term owners from sharp tax increases. This rule helps many residents stay in their homes over longer periods.
