Miami-Dade County, County in southeastern Florida, US.
Miami-Dade County is an administrative region in southeastern Florida that includes urban centers such as Miami and Miami Beach, suburbs, farmland, and portions of the Everglades wetlands. The territory stretches from the Atlantic coastline to inland swamps, covering 34 incorporated municipalities with varied development and land use.
The administrative area was originally formed as Dade County in the 19th century, named after an officer from the Seminole Wars. Residents voted in 1997 to rename it Miami-Dade County, reflecting the city's growing international recognition.
Walking through neighborhoods, you hear Spanish spoken in cafés, markets, and parks, from Cuban families sharing coffee to Colombian vendors chatting with customers. The Caribbean and Latin American influence appears in the food stalls, the merengue and salsa playing from shops, and the community gatherings that fill plazas on weekends.
Public transport links main neighborhoods through rail and bus lines that run from early morning to late evening. Many areas are easier to reach by car, as distances between communities can be wide and sprawl is common.
The local port handles more cruise passengers than any other in the world, serving as the departure point for Caribbean and South American voyages. The international airport functions as a gateway between North and Latin America, with connections that reflect the region's role in hemispheric travel.
