Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, Mediterranean Revival estate in Coconut Grove, Miami, United States
Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is an estate in Coconut Grove, Miami, United States, overlooking Biscayne Bay. The main house spans several floors and is surrounded by ten acres of gardens that link terraces, fountains and sculptures.
James Deering commissioned the works in 1914 as a winter residence using local materials and European artworks. The property opened to the public after his death in 1925 and later became a museum.
The name derives from the Spanish Basque Country and signals the European models that the owner admired. The interiors display furniture and wall panels from Italian palaces that were dismantled and shipped to Florida.
The property opens Wednesday through Monday and offers tours of the interiors as well as access to the outdoor areas. The gardens are extensive, so visitors should wear comfortable shoes and allow time for both sections.
The stone structure in the water offshore served as a breakwater and also provided a sitting area overlooking the open bay. Repairs after Hurricane Andrew in 1992 took several years and saved many endangered items from the collection.
