Florida's 27th congressional district, Congressional district in Miami-Dade County, United States
Florida's 27th congressional district is a political boundary covering the southern part of Miami-Dade County, including neighborhoods such as Downtown Miami, Little Havana, Coral Gables and Kendall. The district extends south of the Dolphin Expressway and connects urban downtown areas with suburban communities farther inland.
This district was redrawn following the 2010 census and took its current shape when elections were held under the new boundaries in 2012. The elected representatives took office in January 2013 and began serving in the House.
Most residents in this congressional area speak Spanish at home, and many trace their roots to Cuba, Venezuela and other Latin American countries. Visitors notice bilingual storefront signs, sidewalk café life and the frequent use of Spanish in everyday conversation throughout the neighborhoods.
The congressional representative serving this district maintains an office in Miami where constituents can reach out with concerns in person or by phone. The boundaries are invisible to visitors, but locals often know which district they live in for voting and civic purposes.
Political analysts rate this district as evenly balanced, meaning election results here often mirror nationwide trends across the United States. This characteristic makes the area a closely watched region during national elections.
