Charles Deering Estate, Historic park and nature preserve in Palmetto Bay, US.
The Charles Deering Estate stretches along Biscayne Bay and includes preserved early twentieth-century residences alongside natural coastal landscapes with mangroves and pine forests. The property combines trails through subtropical vegetation with shoreline passages, where visitors move between architectural structures and open outdoor areas.
The Richmond Cottage was built in 1900 as a winter residence, while Deering commissioned a stone structure two decades later designed to withstand storms with its thick walls. After Deering passed, the grounds changed hands several times before opening to the public.
The property contains a prehistoric burial mound and fossil site where researchers discovered ancient human remains and Pleistocene animal bones dating back thousands of years.
The grounds open most days and offer guided tours through both historic buildings as well as self-guided walks through the natural areas. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes, as paths can be uneven and pass through humid zones.
Beneath the soil lie prehistoric deposits containing bones of extinct animals and tools from early inhabitants. Scientists have uncovered evidence of human activity here reaching back thousands of years.
