The Kampong

The Kampong is a 9-acre tropical garden in Coconut Grove featuring over 65 mango varieties, 23 avocado cultivars, and flowering trees along Biscayne Bay. The property includes three historic buildings, with the main residence and an education center among them.

A prominent plant explorer founded this garden in 1916 and introduced over 30,000 plant species to the United States through his work. His legacy makes it an important center for botanical research and conservation.

The main residence blends Spanish and Southeast Asian architectural styles, showing how international influences shaped Miami's built environment.

The garden is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, offering self-guided tours and educational programs year-round. Visitors should allow enough time to explore the different areas and buildings at a leisurely pace.

The property features historic buildings constructed from oolitic limestone, a local material that plays a distinctive role in South Florida's architecture. This stone has shaped the appearance of many older structures throughout the region.
