MacFarlane Homestead Historic District, Historic residential district in Coral Gables, Florida
MacFarlane Homestead Historic District is a residential neighborhood in Coral Gables that sits between Jefferson Street, Frow Avenue, Brooker Street, and Grand Avenue. It contains 32 historic buildings that were constructed around 1920.
Flora MacFarlane, an early settler and teacher, sold land to George Merrick's development company in 1925. This led to rapid building and development of the neighborhood with new homes.
The neighborhood was shaped by Bahamian immigrant workers who built homes in Mediterranean Revival style during the early 1900s. This architectural tradition continues to define how the area looks and feels today.
The neighborhood can be explored on foot, with guided tours offering a structured overview of the area. The streets are easily accessible and allow views of the homes from different angles.
The homes display original design elements from the 1920s such as decorative tile work, archways, and wrought-iron details. These handcrafted features remain intact and make the neighborhood visually distinctive.
