Coral Gables Merrick House

The Coral Gables Merrick House is a limestone building with fourteen rooms located at 907 Coral Way, surrounded by a wraparound porch and gardens. The grounds include a historic grotto and a lily pond spread across roughly half an acre.

Built in 1906 from a design by Althea Merrick, the structure incorporated an existing wooden cottage into its plan. The limestone used came from a quarry that was later transformed into the Venetian Pool.

This was the childhood home of George Merrick, the founder of Coral Gables, and shows how a prominent family lived in early 20th-century Florida. The rooms and gardens reflect the daily life and tastes of people who shaped the region during its formative years.

Visitors should stay on paved paths since the grotto and pond have limited access areas. Morning hours offer the most comfortable experience, as the garden is quieter and natural light highlights the building's architectural details.

The grotto on the grounds harbors ten different fish species living in its natural pond. This small aquarium was built as part of the garden design and remains a surprisingly living element of the property.
