Coral Gables

Coral Gables is a planned city in Miami-Dade County with tree-lined boulevards spreading outward in radial patterns. Streets named after Spanish cities like Granada and Seville feature fountains at many intersections and public spaces throughout.

George Merrick developed this city during Florida's land boom in the 1920s and incorporated it in 1925. The Biltmore Hotel rose as a central landmark, with most buildings completed by 1926.

The University of Miami brings together students and researchers from around the world in this community. Local theaters present performances throughout the year, while museums in converted historic buildings document the area's past.

The entire area can be explored on foot or by bicycle, especially along park areas and shaded streets. Metrobus and Metrorail connections provide access from surrounding neighborhoods, particularly from downtown Miami.

The Venetian Pool, carved from a former coral rock quarry in 1923, draws water from a subsurface aquifer and features caves and waterfalls. The public swimming site has remained popular with families since opening, especially during hot summer months.
