Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, Tropical botanical garden in Coral Gables, Florida, United States.
Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is a botanical garden covering 83 acres in Coral Gables, south of Miami in Florida. The site includes collections of rare tropical plants such as cycads, flowering trees, vines, and tropical fruit varieties, presented in thematically organized areas.
David Fairchild founded the garden in 1938 following decades of travel during which he collected plant specimens for the Department of Agriculture and introduced them to the United States for the first time. The property developed into a center for tropical botany over subsequent decades and continuously expanded its collections.
The name honors botanist David Fairchild, who introduced plants from five continents to the United States and shaped this property as his life's work. Visitors today experience tropical forests and gardens that reflect his vision of global plant diversity and serve as a place for education and research.
Visitors can take guided tours on a tram or explore paths on their own, while a range of specialized areas such as the Wings of the Tropics butterfly house offer different experiences. A cafe and gift shop complement the visit with refreshments and souvenirs.
The palm collection is considered the largest of its kind in the continental United States and includes over 450 species spread throughout the property. Some of these palms come from regions where they are now endangered or rare in their native habitats.
