Lyford Cay, Private gated community in Nassau, Bahamas.
Lyford Cay is a gated residential community on the western edge of New Providence Island in the Bahamas. The development includes around four hundred and fifty homes along the coast, a yacht harbor with seventy-four slips, and beaches with white sand.
Captain William Lyford Jr. received land here in the late 18th century as a reward for his loyalty to the British crown. Canadian businessman Edward Plunkett Taylor bought the area in the 1950s and turned it into a private club community.
The name honors Captain William Lyford Jr., whose family settled here after receiving land for service during the American Revolutionary War. Today residents from many countries use the club as a gathering place, spending time on the beach or playing golf together.
Access is limited to members and their guests, with prior arrangement required. The grounds cover several kilometers along the coast and include a golf course and tennis courts in addition to homes.
In December 1962 President John F. Kennedy and British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan met at E. P. Taylor's house here for confidential talks. The two leaders used the secluded location for discreet diplomatic negotiations during the Cold War period.
