Holy Trinity Cathedral, Catholic cathedral in downtown Kingston, Jamaica

Holy Trinity Cathedral sits prominently on North Street in downtown Kingston with a striking white exterior and a copper-covered dome that rises above the surrounding buildings. Inside, Byzantine-inspired arches and decorative elements create a sense of height and grandeur throughout the space.

The original church on this site was destroyed in a major earthquake in 1907, leading architect Raymond F. Almirall to design a new structure to replace it. The rebuilt cathedral was completed and opened in 1911 to serve the growing Catholic community.

The cathedral functions as the principal church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kingston, hosting state funerals of notable Jamaican prime ministers.

The cathedral welcomes visitors during the day, though it is best to avoid times when services are in session to see the interior properly. Since it sits in the busy downtown area, arrive on foot or arrange parking beforehand, and keep your valuables close when exploring the surrounding streets.

The cathedral hosted a papal visit from Pope John Paul II in August 1993, a moment that stands out in Jamaican Catholic history. This rare visit left a lasting impression on the local Catholic community and remains a significant memory for many who experienced it.
