Frank País Airport, airport
Frank País Airport is a small airport about 13 kilometers southwest of Holguín with two separate terminal buildings. The International Terminal opened in 1996 and was expanded in 2007, while a smaller Domestic Terminal serves local flights, and both areas offer shops, restaurants, and a VIP lounge.
The airport was built in 1962 as a military facility and began handling civilian traffic in 1966. International expansion started in 1996 with a new international terminal, which was enlarged in 2007 to support growing tourism in the Guardalavaca region.
The airport is named after Frank País, a Cuban revolutionary from the 1950s whose legacy remains important to the region. This naming reflects how the site connects visitors to a significant chapter in Cuba's history.
Passengers board planes using mobile stairs rather than jet bridges, which is typical for smaller airports. The process is straightforward, and airport staff are helpful if you have any questions or concerns.
Many travelers do not realize the facility continues to serve military purposes alongside civilian operations, with fighter aircraft stationed on the grounds. This dual-use arrangement is uncommon at commercial airports and shapes security practices at the site.
