Villa Altagracia, municipality of the Dominican Republic
Villa Altagracia is a municipality in San Cristóbal Province in the southern part of the Dominican Republic. The quiet streets are lined with simple homes and small shops where residents go about their daily routines and chat with neighbors.
The site was originally known as Sabana de los Muertos, named after remains of merchants found there who had been attacked. The area experienced growth in the 20th century with the construction of the Catarey sugar mill, which attracted many workers until its closure in 1986.
The name Villa Altagracia honors a revered Virgin whom residents venerate during their patron saint celebrations. The January 21st festivities bring the entire community together in the church and streets, where people dance, eat, and pray while keeping traditions alive through generations.
Visitors find small shops and spaces to relax, with daytime hours offering the best experience when the town is lively yet peaceful. The surrounding countryside is suitable for short walks and exploring local farms in the area.
The place was formerly called Sabana de los Muertos, referring to remains of merchants found there who perished on a trading route. The streets still echo traces of this era when merchants crossed through on their journeys.
